'Angels' sought for popular Cornwall food festival

Cath Horne moved to Porthleven in Cornwall last August having served for 23 years as a staff member and leader at Sutton Coldfield Baptist Church. She has now been asked to lead a team of Festival Angels at the town's popular food festival.

She is building the team, and explains more

Food festival

I wanted to share a wonderful opportunity with you and ask you to pray with me and to ask God if this is something he would have you be involved with.

Food Festival 2023Each year Porthleven has a food festival, and this year it is from Friday 20 to Sunday 23 April. More than 30,000 people attended last year.

Since moving down here, I have become the secretary of the festival committee. This has been a great way to get to know people but also to be a kingdom influence in the planning of the festival. I’ve been praying for opportunities to have a more overt Christian presence in the festival and God has made a wonderful way and is providing one.

Last year, things got a bit messy at the festival and the village voiced many complaints, rightly so, about what happened, particularly in the evening. There was frustration at young people getting drunk in the streets and on the harbour head, as well as adults getting drunk and rowdy at the festival; litter everywhere, people peeing and throwing up in people’s front gardens, someone tragically falling into the sea and drowning.

As part of our discussions, I felt it right to mention Festival Angels, an organisation run by the same people behind Street Angels. They look to put teams of Christians together to be at festivals like this, helping out. The committee were very excited for me to get in touch with Festival Angels as they knew of Street Pastors.

I’ve been in touch with Festival Angels, and we have agreed for me to oversee a team coming to the Porthleven Food Festival. The team will have two roles. Part of the team will be at a central base where people can pop in for a chat, cup of tea, prayer etc.

The rest of the team will be split into twos and will be dressed in Festival Angels t-shirts and high viz jackets. They will be chatting with people, picking up litter, interacting with the drunk youths, patrolling the harbour trying to make sure people don’t fall in, looking for God given opportunities to talk with people about faith. People volunteer via the Festival Angels website to be part of the team. Here is a link to it: Porthleven - FESTIVALANGELS

Please could you pray that God will raise up the right team, and that the team would be empowered by God and used to share the love of Jesus in practical, spoken and miraculous ways.

Maybe God is asking you come and get involved?
