'We need to keep taking risks as welcomers'
Christian unity - and challenges - at the Preston Guild
Christian leaders joined together in Preston in a display of gospel unity at the heart of a unique and historic celebration.
Leaders from the UK's seven largest churches - including the Revd Ernie Whalley, president elect of the Baptist Union of Great Britain - spoke on the theme of the Living Christ during the ecumenical service at the Preston Guild.
The Preston Guild dates back to 1179 when King Henry II gave the city the right to have a Guild celebration, and is the only Guild still celebrated in the UK.
This year's event - the first of the 21st century and the first since the granting of Preston's city status in 2002 - began on Friday and finishes next Sunday. It features a range of arts and exhibitions.
The ecumenical service is always a highlight, and more than 3,000 people crammed into the giant big top tent in Avenham Park on Sunday.
Ernie shared a stage with the likes of Dr John Sentamu, Archbishop of York (the Church of England) and the Revd Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster (Roman Catholic Church), and each leader was given three minutes to speak.
He reminded the crowd that Christ's offer is to everyone, and challenged Christians to keep taking risks as 'welcomers'.
'Today the Living Christ is saying to all: 'You are loved.... everyone of you in Preston and beyond, You matter to me ....! Come just as you.
'We, Christ's followers, do not always show the same hospitality. In the name of the Living Christ, we need to keep taking risks as 'welcomers'.
'In the face of all the challenges, to open up the door and share good news across the boundaries; Good news of life and peace.'
The service was compered by Aled Jones, the Songs of Praise presenter, and included groups of children from across the denominations who presented their ideas and vision of working together for the common good.
There was also a specially commissioned production of music, and to watch the dance and drama presentations. The Revd Phil Jump, regional minister team leader of the North Western Baptist Association, was among the local leaders invited to the service.
Ernie said, 'It was a wonderful celebration of our unity in the Gospel and the way we are harnessing our energies together to bring the good news of the Living Christ in Preston and way beyond.
'The presence of young people - both through dance and in leading prayers - was a powerful signpost to the future.'
