Prayer Reflection Video - 15 January

God in the silence
Verse:
Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. Then there came a voice to him…
1 Kings 19:11-13 (NRSV)
Reflection

Silence

Noise is all around us
From without and from within.
From places deep inside us
and the places we have been.

It rises from the earth
Crossing sea and sky and ground
It echoes from those around us.
A constant deafening sound.

When we seek to hear the loudness
When noise is chosen and preferred
The quietness can be defeated
and the stillness can’t be heard

Yet God is in the stillness
It’s when silence becomes a sound.
At last, we might hear him speaking
There, his voice is found.

So, with faces wrapped with mantles
and bodies bowed in prayer
May we stop to hear God’s silence
And the stillness waiting there.

Prayer
Dear Lord, who can speak out of silence help me today to stop listening to the noise of the world, the noise of others and the noise of my own soul. Help me to recognise that your presence is often found in the stopping, the waiting, the stillness and the silence. Speak, for your servant is listening and longing to hear your voice out of divine stillness.
